  • This record describes gravity data collected on RV Investigator voyage IN2020_V06, titled "Probing the Australian-Pacific Plate Boundary: Macquarie Ridge in 3-D." The voyage took place between October 8 and November 1, 2020 departing from Hobart (TAS) and arriving in Hobart (TAS). The gravity meter instrument is a MicroG Lacoste Air-Sea II. Data are stored in .ENV and .DAT data files at CSIRO. There are 26 files totalling 425 MB of raw data in this dataset. Wharf tie[s] were undertaken at Hobart Princes Wharf No.4 location using a Scintrex Autograv CG-5. Wharf tie data can be found in "Hobart wharf_tie_2020_11_02.TXT", which is stored with the raw data.   • This record describes scientific split-beam echosounder data collected on the RV Investigator voyage IN2021_V01, "Quantifying krill abundance for krill monitoring and management off the Australian Antarctic Territory", which departed Hobart on the 29th January 2021 and returned to Hobart on the 24th March 2021 (AEST). The Simrad EK80 split beam echosounders 18, 38, 70 120, 200 and 333 kHz were used to acquire acoustic backscatter data to a maximum range of 1500 m between Hobart and near Mawson station, Antarctica. All frequencies were logged continuously for the extent of the voyage. Acquisition settings (pulse length, power) were varied for the transit and survey portions of the voyage according to science requirements. Specific settings for each time period can be obtained from the GSM voyage report. From 1 Feb, 2021 the 18kHz WBT was replaced with the 18kHz GPT which was run for the remainder of the voyage. A calibration was performed at the survey location on 13 Feb 2021. Data are stored in *.raw, *.bot and *.idx format at CSIRO. There are 3192 files totalling 295 GB of raw data in this dataset.   • This record describes multibeam echosounder data collected from the Marine National Facility (MNF) RV Investigator Voyage IN2020_V01, titled: “Development of William’s Ridge, Kerguelen Plateau: tectonics, hotspot magmatism, microcontinents, and Australia’s Extended Continental Shelf” between January 08 and March 06, 2020 departing from Henderson (WA) and returning back to Fremantle (WA). The Kongsberg EM122 multibeam echosounder was used to acquire seafloor bathymetry, backscatter information and watercolumn backscatter at Rig Seismic Seamount, Williams Ridge, Broken Ridge and on associated transits. The EM122 provides a 1 degree by 1 degree angular resolution. The echosounder's nominal frequency is 12 kHz. Data are stored in *.all raw format for bathymetry and backscatter and *.wcd format for watercolumn backscatter at CSIRO. There are 2164 files totalling 174 GB of raw data in this dataset. Sound velocity profiles were applied to this data during data acquisition. Bathymetry data contained in *.all format are corrected for motion and position. Tide corrections were not applied to the processed data. Processed data had outliers removed. Processed line data are available in *.gsf and ascii format, and processed bathymetry and backscatter grids in geotiff format.   • This record provides the results of the RV Investigator Meteorological Instrument Survey using the Leica TCRP 1205+ Total Station. The table provided, dated the 28th January, 2015 shows the elevation of each meteorological sensor above the vessel's summer load line to allow for data correction due to sensor height above sea surface and/or other factors due to installation.   • This record describes some gravity data collected on RV Investigator voyage IN2015_V02, using MicroG Lacoste Air-Sea system II; the ship departed Sydney on 15 May and arrived in Brisbane on 26 May 2015. Due to instrument problems gravity data was only collected on 24 and 25 May. Data are stored in .ENV and .DAT files at CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere. There are 4 files. At wharf calibration data is in wharf_tie_dec-2014 subdirectory.

  • This record describes multibeam echosounder data collected on RV Investigator voyage IN2016_V05, "The Great Barrier Reef as a significant source of climatically relevant aerosol particles". The voyage departed Brisbane on 28th September 2016. Leg 1 ended on 11 October with a personnel transfer at Fitzroy Island. Leg 2 ended on 16 October with another personnel transfer at Magnetic Island, then the voyage ended in Brisbane on 24 October 2016. The Kongsberg EM710 MKII multibeam echosounder was used to acquire seafloor bathymetry and backscatter information and watercolumn backscatter during most of the survey. The EM710 MKII provides a 0.5° by 1° transmit and receive angular resolution respectively. The echosounder's nominal frequency range is from 40 to 100 kHz. Data are stored in *.all raw format for bathymetry and backscatter and *.wcd format for watercolumn backscatter at CSIRO. There are 489 files totalling 393 GB of raw data in this dataset. Sound velocity profiles were applied to this data during data acquisition. Bathymetry data contained in *.all format are corrected for motion and position. Tide corrections were not applied to the processed data. Processed data has had outliers removed. Processed line data are available in *.gsf and ascii format.   • This record describes the operations undertaken and geological sample data collected on the Fugro vessel REM Etive Charter Voyage RE2017_C01, titled "Great Australian Bight (GAB) Deep Water Geological and Benthic Ecology Program." This charter voyage took place from Hobart to Adelaide between the 13th of March and the 6th of April, 2017. The voyage, undertaken over 25 days, was a great success with 33 researchers from several research organisations and the vessel crew undertaking 40 operations over 5 target areas in water depths ranging from 1000 m to 3000 m. The voyage deployed a diverse range of instrumentation fully utilising the REM Etive capabilities which included two work class Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV). This record contains video stills data recorded by the ROVs during the survey. Images can be accessed and downloaded via the Distribution links below.

    Seabird and incidental cetacean and seal sightings were recorded during daylight hours during the entire voyage. During the voyage, there was 2,581 transect counts of seabirds of 61 species. Coverage was good over the area around Heard and McDonald islands, with some coverage also of Gunnari Ridge. Also covered some deeper parts of the Central Kerguelen Plateau. There were 31 sightings of sea mammals away from the immediate vicinity of Heard and McDonald islands (fur seals were sufficiently common in waters around Heard and McDonald Island to be treated using the same method as for seabirds). Sightings included five species of whales and three species of dolphins. The most intriguing series of sightings comprised seven sightings (approximately eight animals) of blue whales over Gunnari Ridge on 9/10 February (another sighting on 21 January may have been in the same area, as it was approximately 1° north and 1° west of the February sightings) The data has been published to the Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS https://obis.org).

  • This record describes magnetometer data collected on RV Investigator voyage voyage IN2020_E01 (Trials and Calibration) which departed Hobart on the 29th July 2020 and returned to Hobart on the 6th August 2020. The purpose of this voyage was to undertake post port-period equipment calibrations and commissioning, sea trials and personnel training. The SeaSPY2 magnetometer uses an omnidirectional Overhauser sensor that requires no realignment or recalibration and has no heading error. The instrument has an absolute accuracy of 0.1 nT, sensor sensitivity of 0.01 nT and resolution of 0.001 nT. Data are stored in .CSV and .MMS data files at CSIRO. 0.68 MB of raw data was acquired in this dataset. No processing has been conducted on this data. The magnetometer was towed 300 m astern of the ship and a layback value of 361 m was applied to the magnetometer data. This was the total distance behind the ship's positioning reference point. Note: The magnetometer was only deployed for a short period (between 23:04 & 23:51 on the 03/08/2020 - UTC) for training purposes only.   • This record describes multibeam echosounder data collected on RV Investigator voyage IN2017_C02, ['Hogan Group Hydrographic Survey – Bass Strait'] which departed Hobart on the 4th May 2017 and came alongside Bell Bay following completion of the survey on the 14th May 2017. The Kongsberg EM2040c multibeam echo sounder (dual transceivers) was used to acquire seafloor bathymetry and backscatter information [(and watercolumn backscatter)] around Bass Strait. The EM2040c provides a 1.3° by 1.3° transmit and receive angular resolution respectively (single transceiver). The echosounder's nominal frequency range was [300 kHz] and it was operated in dual swath mode. Data are stored in *.all raw format for bathymetry and backscatter and *.wcd format for watercolumn backscatter at CSIRO. There are 435 files totalling 99 GB of raw .all data in the dataset. Sound velocity profiles were applied to this data during data acquisition. Bathymetry data contained in *.all format are corrected for motion and position. Tide corrections were applied to the processed data. Processed data has had outliers removed. Processed line data are not available in *.gsf and ascii format, but can be requested if required. Additional information regarding this dataset, including further information on processing streams, is contained in the GSM data acquisition and processing report.
